Hot Search - Searching Current Logs in Real-Time

Learn how to use hot search to analyze your current logs with powerful search capabilities

Updated yesterday

Overview

Hot search is a powerful feature that lets you search and analyze logs currently stored in your active database. This real-time search capability helps you quickly find specific log entries, troubleshoot issues, and monitor your location's activity without needing to access archived data.

Hot search is available directly from the Location Details page, making it easy to analyze recent log activity for any of your locations.

Hot search focuses on current logs - the logs of a location that are actively stored in your database and readily accessible. These are typically your most recent logs, making hot search ideal for:

  • Real-time troubleshooting and monitoring

  • Analyzing recent activity patterns

  • Quick searches for specific log entries

  • Investigating current issues or events

  • Reviewing logs from the past hours or days

For older logs that have been archived, you'll need to use cold search instead (see the Cold Search article for details).

Hot search is integrated into the Location Details page. To access it:

  1. Navigate to your organization's locations

  2. Select the location you want to analyze

  3. Go to the Location Details page at /organizations/:orgId/locations/:locationId

  4. Locate the Current Logs viewer section

The Location Details page provides comprehensive information about your location, including live log streaming, storage usage, and the hot search functionality for analyzing current logs.

Searching Your Logs

The hot search feature allows you to search through your current logs using text queries. Simply enter your search term, and the system will highlight matching results in your log entries.

Search capabilities include:

  • Text-based queries to find specific log content

  • Case-insensitive matching for easier searching

  • Real-time highlighting of search terms in results

  • Multiple occurrence highlighting within the same log entry

When you enter a search term, matching text will be highlighted with a visual indicator, making it easy to spot relevant entries in your log stream.

Filtering by Time Range

Hot search supports time range filtering, allowing you to narrow your search to specific time periods. This is particularly useful when you know approximately when an event occurred or want to analyze logs from a particular timeframe.

Time-based filtering helps you:

  • Focus on logs from specific hours or days

  • Reduce the volume of results to review

  • Correlate events with known timeframes

  • Improve search performance by limiting the scope

Understanding Your Search Results

When you perform a hot search, the system displays matching log entries with your search terms highlighted. This visual highlighting makes it easy to:

  • Quickly scan through results

  • Identify relevant log entries

  • See the context around matching terms

  • Spot patterns across multiple logs

The search results maintain the original log formatting and timestamps, so you can see exactly when each matching entry was recorded.

Understanding when to use hot search versus cold search is important for efficient log analysis:

Use Hot Search When:

  • You need to analyze recent logs (hours to days old)

  • You're troubleshooting current issues

  • You want fast, real-time search results

  • Your logs are still in the active database

  • You're monitoring ongoing activity

Use Cold Search When:

  • You need to search older, archived logs

  • You're conducting historical analysis

  • You're looking for patterns over longer time periods

  • The logs you need have been moved to archive storage

Hot search is optimized for speed and real-time analysis, while cold search is designed for comprehensive searches across archived data.

Performance and Best Practices

Performance Considerations

Hot search is designed for fast, real-time searching of current logs. However, keep these factors in mind:

  • Search scope: Narrower time ranges return results faster

  • Query complexity: Simple text searches perform better than complex patterns

  • Log volume: Locations with high log volumes may take longer to search

  • Active database size: Search performance depends on your current log storage

Best Practices

To get the most out of hot search:

  1. Start with specific search terms - More specific queries return more relevant results

  2. Use time range filters - Narrow your search window when possible

  3. Monitor your location's log activity - The Location Details page shows real-time log receiving status

  4. Check for stale logs - If logs are more than an hour old, you may see a warning indicator

  5. Consider your subscription - Some advanced features may require specific subscription plans

Location Status Indicators

The Location Details page provides several indicators to help you understand your log activity:

  • Active + Receiving: A pulsing green indicator shows logs are actively flowing

  • Active + No logs yet: Your location is configured but hasn't received logs

  • Active + Stale logs: A warning appears if logs are more than an hour old

  • Inactive: The location is not currently active

These indicators help you understand whether hot search will return recent results or if you need to investigate connectivity issues.

Tips for Effective Log Analysis

  1. Use the live log streaming - The Location Details page includes real-time log updates via WebSocket, perfect for monitoring current activity

  2. Combine with storage charts - Review storage usage patterns alongside your search results

  3. Check location statistics - The statistics card shows last log timestamps and platform information

  4. Review filter rules - Your configured filter rules may affect which logs are stored and searchable

Need to Search Older Logs?

If you need to search logs that are no longer in your active database, refer to the Cold Search article. Cold search is specifically designed for searching archived logs and provides different capabilities optimized for historical data analysis.

Getting Help

If you're having trouble with hot search or need assistance analyzing your logs:

  • Check your location's status indicators for connectivity issues

  • Verify your subscription includes the features you need

  • Review your storage usage to ensure logs are being retained

  • Contact support if you encounter errors or unexpected behavior

Hot search is a powerful tool for real-time log analysis, helping you stay on top of your location's activity and quickly troubleshoot issues as they arise.
